Why we should live in present?

The first story of Betal Pachchisi is a perfect example of beauty of
the present. It elaborates how pointless it is to worry about the future and
regret about the past. The story is about the great kind Vikramaditya and
how he met Vetal. The story goes like this:
Once upon a time, the king was sitting in the courtyard and people
of the state were offering him presents, to show their respect towards the
king. One faqir (beggar) came and gifted him a wild fruit. The fruit did not look edible. Hence, the King gave it to his prime minister. The faqir came
every year to the gifting ceremony and brought the same fruit. King didn’t
pay much attention and kept giving it to his minister.
On tenth year, the king somehow changed his mind and handed the
fruit to a monkey present in the courtyard. The monkey grabbed the fruit
and started eating it. As the monkey munched the fruit, it threw out a
huge diamond, which was inside the fruit. The diamond was grand and
something no one had seen like before. The king was surprised and asked
the minister about rest of the fruits. The minister said that he had thrown
away the fruits because he thought they were of no use.
Surprised and stunned, the king called in the faqir and asked why did
he keeping bring the fruit diamonds and never told him. The faqir very
calmly said that he brought the fruit to give the message of life to the
king. Like these fruits with diamonds hidden in them, life brings every day
opportunities hidden in them. You need to keep calm and pay attention.
The king was awestruck. The faqir requested him to forget what is
gone in the past and not worry about the future.
Therefore, if you are focused on the present you will sure find the hidden diamonds of opportunities in them.
Life is nothing but a journey of opportunities. Every day, life brings you wonderful reasons to make your time on this earth worth something good.
Past and future both are out of your control. The only thing that you have is NOW and this is what you should pay attention to.
